Renowned Usability Expert
I admire Jakob Nielsen, renowned usability expert. He has been called:“The guru of Web page usability” (The New York Times),“The world’s leading expert on Web usability’ (U.S. News & World Report), and“One of the world’s most influential designers” (Businessweek). He holds a Ph.D. in human–computer interaction (HCI) from the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen… Continue reading

Accident And Virtual Reality
I was involved in a car accident on 9/17. I continue to thank the Almighty that it was not a deadly accident and that that I am okay. Most people take photos of the vehicles after an accident. Those photos could actually be used to digitally reconstruct the accident, according to this research paper on… Continue reading

A displaced little girlWept years in silenceAnd whispered wishes you’d materializeShe pressed on night and dayTo keep on livingAnd tried to many waysTo keep her soul aliveDid you really careCare enough… Continue reading

Gamification For Learning
Yesterday’s post on the gamification of an open government data portal was very interesting. I discovered that the term gamification is also used in connection with training/learning. Gaming concepts are also used to make learning fun and increase student engagement. I have some experience using games for learning. During my MS in Finance program, one… Continue reading

Open Government Data Portals And Gamification
I found an interesting paper on open government data portals: Tailoring open government data portals for lay citizens: A gamification theory approachAnthony Simonofski, Anneke Zuiderwijk, Antoine Clarinvala, Wafa Hammedihttps://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0268401222000421 I learned from the paper that most open government portals work best for expert users. The researchers proposed a gamification approach to “simplify” the portals for… Continue reading

Trust in Web Retailing
Trust is important. Customers are more likely to purchase items (such as food) from a retailer he/she trusts. In the area of online reviews, users are more likely to act on a recommendation from a review he/she trusts(thinks is fair and balanced rather than one-sided, is from a recognized expert, provides pictures, and so on).… Continue reading

Cooking
My cousin Sonia was a good cook. Her last job was a cook for a small restaurant that sold food at several locations in Linden. She told me she cooked the food in very large (waist-high) pots.Sonia learned a lot about cooking from her mom who made food for children. My grandmother was also a… Continue reading

New Word
This morning, I learned of the passing of a cousin in Guyana. I may be traveling soon for her funeral. R.I.P. Sonia. One of yesterday’s posts highlighted words that were created/formed by combining two words. Culturability and Amerindian. The combined word is called a portmanteau of the two words (Amerindian is a portmanteau of “American Indian”)… Continue reading

Culturability
Culture affects usability. For example, color may have different meanings in countries. A website with lots of green would be a problem in France since the French associate green with criminality. On the other hand, a website with lots of green would invoke positive feelings in Egypt and Middle Eastern countries. The following article provides… Continue reading
ABOUT ME
I am the author of a new and different poembook on a section of my life. In the next few months, I would like to publish more of my PhD papers as well as more lessons from my life.
I am on a break from PhD studies at National University, formerly Northcentral University (NCU). At NU, I completed 11 signature assignments – significant papers with original ideas. In one paper, I foresaw specific problems at a major company. In another, I designed a study (with statistical analyses) to explain why videos do not significantly enhance or improve online reviews. I worked alone. My signature assignments are available at: https://fahmeenaodettasignaturepapers.tumblr.com.
Bio:
For a long time, I worked in auditing, finance, and information technology. I excelled at financial reporting, analysis, modeling, and training. I wrote a lot at work. I wrote analysis reports, plans, and tons of emails to communicate issues and such. At some point, I decided to pursue a PhD to qualify for special teaching positions. One of my advantages was my multidisciplinary background, including experience in several areas, which I made work for me in my PhD papers. During a break from my PhD, I decided to write about my childhood using poetry. It turned out to be very successful.
About THIS BLOG
I created this blog to capture my thoughts and ideas and to practice writing. Why practice writing? I was on a break from my PhD and not writing much. I needed to continue writing regularly – I wrote and submitted weekly assignments/papers.
I also track my mental health using this blog.
I am currently working on publishing my papers in academic journals. Click the ‘paperforpublishing’ tag in the tags section below for my last status update. Usability/user experience is one of my topics. Click on the ‘usability’ label/tag to view my posts, including ideas, on usability. I have new ideas you may be interested in. If you are here for information on my success research, click on the ‘success’ tag. If you are here for information on my hometown, click on the ‘lindenguyana’ tag. If you are curious about my choices about God, click on the ‘WhyGodForever’ label.
I welcome comments. Submit your comments and feedback at any time. I prefer that you use Facebook for comments, but feel free to comment in any of the blogs or on Twitter.
